The almond is the velvety fruit of the almond tree, a very ancient tree native to Iran, which spread widely to Pharaonic Egypt and then throughout the Mediterranean basin following the Arab conquests. Although the almond tree belongs to the same family as the cherry, plum, and peach trees, the edible part of its fruit is the seed contained within its fibrous kernel. It is the almond's oval shape that gave it its name (amygdala = oblong).
