The cashew nut, or cashew apple, is the nut of an Amazonian tree: the cashew tree. Containing a smooth, light-colored, crescent-shaped seed, it develops at the end of edible false fruits called cashew apples. The cashew-apple structure resembles an "upside-down heart," hence its name (ana- = upside-down, -carde = heart).
